While the true purpose of the Second Amendment applies to a very, very specific situation that we hope we never need to witness, the collateral affects are equally as beneficial to the nation as a whole.

Of course, without the Second Amendment there would be no rifle hunting.  Those of us choosing to participate in the activity, whether it be for sport, sustenance, or both, must be thankful that our Founders experienced the horrors that they did under British rule, and that their struggle cemented the all-important right to bear arms in our nation’s ethos.

Now, the crossover in applications of the Second Amendment has also been a powerful part of the American experience, and those who hunt do sometimes find themselves in situations where the i self defense characteristics of the right to bear arms come into play as well.

Such is that story of a young man who bravely defended his home against in intruder using nothing but his trusty hunting rifle.

A 16-year-old Ackerman, Mississippi, resident used a deer rifle to shoot and kill a home invader Tuesday.

The Associated Press reports that Choctaw County Chief Deputy Lee Upchurch identified the deceased individual (pictured) as Jerry Lee Robinson. He said Robinson tried to make entry into the home while holding a hatchet and then “made an aggressive move” toward the 16-year-old.

The Miami Herald reports that the teen then fired one shot at Robinson with .270 rifle. Officers arrived on scene to find Robinson unresponsive.

Robinson, the uncle of the 16-year-old who shot him, had allegedly threatened the family two weeks before. The boy’s mother told WCBI, “I have some videos where he came into my yard with two machetes, threatening my husband, and everything.”

Who knows what kind of damage this intruder could have caused if not for the bravery of this young man of the house.

Of course, the Second Amendment doesn’t explicitly protect the concept of self defense in the home.  (It’s just self defense of the republic).  But, there is no doubt that stories such as this young man’s tale reiterate just how important the right to bear arms has made itself in the modern nation.
