For the past several years there have been multiple attempts at creating a “safe” gun, but with little success. Most designs utilize some form of unreliable or untested technology such as; fingerprint scanners, “microstamping“, or RFI chips. The primary focus behind these designs is to allow only the owner of the weapon to pull the trigger- theoretically eliminating the possibility of the gun being used by someone else to cause harm, maliciously or accidentally.

Kai Kloepfer is an 18-year-old kid who believes he is on the path to successfully create the “safe” gun…Completely self-taught, Kai has already designed and developed a functioning prototype that requires an owners finger print to operate. This venture started as a high school science fair project. Since then, Kai has be awarded more than $50,000 in grants to continue the development of his smart-gun.

While his quest is noble, the idea of there ever being a so called “safe” gun is not realistic. The only way to have a safe gun is to have knowledgeable and safe owners. Implementing unproven and unreliable technology into a tool that is meant to be used in split-second, high adrenaline situations adds variables that could be the difference between life and death for you and your family.
