Virginia state law prohibits a governor from serving consecutive terms, so current Governor Terry McAuliffe, a Democrat cannot run. Two other Democrats, Tom Perriello and current Lt. Governor Ralph Northam are running against each other in hopes of winning the Democratic primary election. The gloves have already been tossed off as the two candidates begin bickering with each other over the other’s record on gun control issues.

Virginia Democrats are fighting over their gun-control records in the lead up to next month’s gubernatorial primary election.

During a recent meet-and-greet with candidate Tom Perriello at Roanoke College, one gun-control activist browbeat the former congressman over his mixed record on the issue. Catherine Koebel, founder of the Blue Ridge Coalition Against Gun Violence and a supporter of Perriello opponent Lt. Governor Ralph Northam, told him she does not trust him.

“I personally came here today because I’m worried,” she said according to the Roanoke Times. “I’m worried that I’m going to have a hard time trusting you during this primary.”…

In the 2016 presidential election, Virginia voted Democrat by a 49.9% to 45.0% margin. Chances are, they will elect another Democrat as governor to replace McAuliffe. In fact, 27 of the last 33 governors of Virginia have been Democrats. Now the question is whether or not gun control will be a major deciding factor for Virginia voters?
