We are making our schools safer one step at a time. Texas lawmakers (it seems like everything good happens in Texas first) voted to allow permit holders to have their handguns inside their cars that are parked in the school’s parking lot.

While this is not the endgame, it is a huge step. Ultimately we would love for college students with permits to be able to carry with them to class and around campus as well. Baby steps!

The Senate gave final approval to the measure Saturday, sending it to Gov. Greg Abbott for his consideration. The vote came a day after Abbott signed into law a sharp decrease in fees paid to obtain a handgun license.

The bill allowing guns in parked cars at schools is aimed at teachers and school workers who want to keep their weapons in their vehicles without violating state law. Opponents worry it raises the potential for danger if a car is burglarized on school property.
There are some states in the U.S. that have already approved for legal permit holders to carry on campus, while there are others who (like Texas) allow in vehicles only, and some states still have the act banned.
According to Armed Campuses, here is a color coded map to show what each state allows:

What does your state allow? Are you satisfied with it? If not, what are you doing to convince legislators to change the law?
