The fervor and fear mongering of the liberal left could very well be a harbinger of dark days to come, at least according to a recent high profile speech by President Trump.

The annual CPAC conference is once again in full swing, this time with the dark cloud of the Parkland, Florida school shooting hanging over its head.  Of course, this has vastly redirected the conversation at the conservative gathering, with men such as Wayne LaPierre, head of the NRA, delivering a blistering defense of the Second Amendment just the other day from the main stage.

LaPierre was, of course, preaching to the choir.

Last night, however, when President Trump took the stage at the conference, his message was bold, blustery, and dire:  Without republican victories in 2018 and 2020, there is a real risk of losing our precious Second Amendment.

“President Trump, in a fiery and freewheeling speech to conservative activists on Friday, implored his base to get off their ‘ass’ and ‘clobber’ Democrats in upcoming elections so they won’t try to repeal the Second Amendment, undo recent tax cuts and install liberal judges.

“’If they get in, they will repeal your tax cuts,’ Trump said during an appearance at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference outside Washington. ‘They will put judges in that you wouldn’t believe. They will take away your Second Amendment, which we will never allow to happen.’

“Trump, in a speech reminiscent of those during the campaign, ticked off his accomplishments over the last year, including passing tax cuts, deciding to move the U.S. embassy in Jerusalem and withdrawing from the Paris climate accord.

“The president also used the occasion to address the recent debate over gun control, in the wake of last week’s school shooting massacre in Florida, and call for more armed security in schools. Had teachers been armed in Florida, Trump said, ‘the teacher would have shot the hell out of [the attacker] before he knew what happened.'”

This speech, coming on the heels of some of the President’s more conciliatory public statements regarding the right to bear arms, should help to solidify his stance on the all important amendment in the eyes of the republican base.

In the wake of the horrific mental illness attack in Florida, which just so happened to be a shooting, the President offered what could very likely be lip service to those clamoring for more gun control, suggesting that he would be open to changing the legal age requirements for individuals to purchase semi automatic rifles – a move that many believe contradicts his previously outlined stance on gun rights.
