JOSEPHINE COUNTY, OREGON-  Senate Bill 941 is a new piece of legislation that requires criminal background checks for private gun transfers. If passed, Oregon would become the 12th state to adopt the policy. On Tuesday, this bill was passed through the state Senate. Many might assume that most legislators and law enforcement from this region of the US would be in favor of stricter gun laws. However, that is not the case for one man.

Sheriff Dave Daniel, of Josephine County, told reporters that it appears that the law is not in line with the county’s charter and said he does not have the personnel to pursue violators committing a misdemeanor.

The Herald and News report pointed out that Daniel is in a precarious position because state law would seemingly trump the county charter. But Daniel appeared to play down the significance of the law.

“I can’t enforce that law, so therefore it won’t be enforced,” Daniel told the paper. He continued, “I have felonies going on daily in Josephine County. That’s my priorities.”

Hopefully more leaders and law enforcement will step forward in the coming months in opposition of the bill. Until then, it is still refreshing to know that there are still people out there that hold values and oaths above popular opinion.
