Navasota, Texas is a community of less than 10,000 people located about 60 miles northwest from downtown Houston at the junction of highways 6 and 105. The school district, that provides education for miles around, has voted to place the safety of kids and teachers over the issue of gun control.

Beginning the 2018-19 school year, teachers who have undergone extensive training, to carry their concealed weapons with them while at school. The action is part of the Guardian Plan which seeks to offer the best protection in the event of an active shooter on any of the district’s school campuses.

(The Eagle) – Teachers in the Navasota school district will have the option, beginning in the 2018-2019 school year, to carry a firearm on school property as part of the district’s new Guardian Plan.

The plan means that in addition to uniformed law enforcement officers, approved and authorized educators will be allowed to carry a weapon on campus.

Each school district in the state has the option to choose emergency plans that will work best, and the Guardian Plan is what administrators and the trustees felt fit Navasota ISD best.

“I’m pleased with the board’s decision,” Navasota Superintendent Stu Musick said.

Trustees approved the proposed Guardian Plan during their April 16 board meeting. Slowly, more and more school districts are beginning to realize that the best defense against the possibility of an active shooter is to have trained and armed teachers in the classrooms. Personally, I believe there should be a minimum of 2 trained and armed teachers or faculty members in every individual building on every school campus in the nation. It increases the odds of being able to stop an active shooter as soon as any shooting begins.
