There are few crimes in this world that immediately disqualify a human being from the glory and grace of salvation in my eyes faster than animal cruelty.

The idea that a human being, one of the few creatures under heaven’s skies to understand sympathy and empathy, could use their cunning in order to inflict pain and torture on creatures who can never understand this betrayal is a sin like no other.

What’s ever more disgusting is when a group of individuals decides that they should use their human intellect to trick these animals into killing and maiming one another for entertainment.  While much of the world may think that these incidents are exceedingly rare, the truth is far more sinister.

Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies saved the lives of more than a dozen innocent dogs from a dog fighting ring on Sunday.

After receiving complaints of dogs fighting near Main Street in Mulga, Alabama, Chief Deputy Randy Christian said that they could hear them somewhere in the woods behind one of the houses. They intercepted one person carrying an injured canine, then proceeded to find 17 more. Four of those had injuries consistent with dog fighting.

Eleven dog skulls were found in the area surrounding a ring that contained fresh blood.

Authorities arrested Reginald Antonio Dowdell, 42, for allegedly participating in dog fighting. “He was booked into the county jail and later released on a $15,000 bond,” reports WVTM.

One local humane association leader was unable to contain her emotions while making a statement on the subject:

“It sickens me to think these people live and walk amongst us in our community. And the fact that these scum bags had a child on scene made me want to throw up. Pray for all of these poor creatures and pray for the GBHS hands that will be trying to heal the hurts these animals have suffered over the next many many months” said Greater Birmingham Humane Society President and CEO Allison Cornelius.

If you would like to help in the possible rehabilitation of these animals, you can contact the GHBS at their website.
