Every year, as Memorial Day approaches, there are pockets of America that need a bit of a reminder as to the true meaning behind Memorial Day.

It’s more than easy to get caught up in the lake-house, boat ride, hot dog grilling good time that a long weekend can bring to us, and there are plenty of opportunities throughout the year to celebrate in such a manner without a need for further introspection.

Memorial Day isn’t one of those.

And while it is fine to go out and have a good time this weekend, you are doing yourself a disservice by not giving credit where credit is due.  There are plenty of brave Americans who gave up everything in order for you to enjoy these freedoms, and a little nod to them on this long weekend is all it might take.

Oh, and don’t say “Happy Memorial Day”.  It’s not like that.

In an op-ed piece for Fox News, Robert O’Neill, the man responsible for ending the life of miserable terror magnate Osama bin Laden had this to say on the subject:

Don’t wish me a happy Memorial Day. There is nothing happy about the loss of the brave men and women of our armed forces who died in combat defending America. Memorial Day is not a celebration.

Memorial Day is a time for reflection, pause, remembrance and thanksgiving for patriots who gave up their own lives to protect the lives and freedom of us all – including the freedom of generations long gone and generations yet unborn. We owe the fallen a debt so enormous that it can never be repaid.

The man who called the DotCom crash, the housing boom & bust, and market’s surge since ’09 warns of a new panic ahead.

Memorial Day is a time to honor the lives of those who would rather die than take a knee when our national anthem is played. But they will fight and die for the rights of those who kneel.
This holiday is a time to think of young lives cut short, of wives and husbands turned into widows and widowers, of children growing up without a father or mother, of parents burying their children.
O’Neill goes not to lament how the “holiday” has become the de facto “start of summer” party weekend, largely thanks to the arbitrary decision by communal pools the nation over to open on Memorial Day Weekend.
And sure, there will be fireworks out there as Uncle Jim Bob practices for blowing his fingertips off in July, but even on Independence Day those displays are meant to be a reflection of the bombs, gunfire, and cannon balls of the Revolutionary War.  Not exactly the most relaxing site in the world.
So, raise a glass and grill some beef this weekend, but don’t be an ignoramus as well.  Give credit where it’s due, and remember why you’re able to enjoy living in America.
