There are few things more vile and despicable than exploiting man’s best friend for the sake of illicit and untaxed gains.

This was the downfall of Michael Vick, a promising young quarterback with the Atlanta Falcons who was tried and convicted of a number of horrific crimes involving his own enormous dog fighting operation.

A Virginia grand jury has indicted suspended Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick and three co-defendants on state charges of running a dogfighting ring at Vick’s Virginia home, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Suspended Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick faces sentencing on federal charges in December.

The Surry County grand jury brought two charges against Vick: one count of unlawfully torturing and killing dogs and one of promoting dogfights. Each is a felony charge that could result in a five-year prison term.
Vick ended up spending the next 18 months in prison at the notorious facility in Leavenworth, Kansas.
Given the abhorrent nature of his crimes, the American people were hotly divided by Vick’s actions.  Many sports fans believed that Vick has done his time and paid his debt to society.  Others, however, saw him as an inherently evil entity whose heinous treatment of these otherwise fine animals will forever be his cross to bear.
And, even after the high profile case gripped the national attention, and the truth about America’s dogfighting problem came to the forefront of our cultural cognizance, the underworld continues to push forward with their vile enterprise.
Near Atlanta, Georgia this week another enormous ring of dogfighting degenerates were thwarted.
More than 60 pit bulls thought to be part of a large dogfighting operation were rescued from a home in Middle Georgia, authorities said.

The March 17 raid by several agencies came after a Georgia State Patrol trooper stopped a vehicle that had a bloodied dog inside, the Macon Telegraph reported.

The dogs were at a home in Dodge County, prosecutor Chris Gordon said.

Seven people were arrested on dogfighting charges, including a resident of the home. Authorities also seized guns, marijuana and cocaine.

Dog fighting isn’t just a horrific and gruesome act of cruelty, but also, the horrendous endeavor ends up being just a piece of a larger and more nefarious organized criminal enterprise.

And, in perhaps one of the least desirable outcomes of the entire affair is the damage being done to the otherwise fantastic “breed” known as the “Pit Bull”.

These dogs have long been “America’s” dog, being one of the only breeds to have originated in the United States.  Furthermore, the Pit Bull breeds have been pop culture icons for ages, having made stints as the adorable sidekick to The Little Rascals, the brand ambassador for RCA Victor, and a sergeant in the U.S. Army.
