Per prior policy, on duty firefighters were not permitted to carry their firearms inside the firehouse. In fact, the policy prevented any city employees (except police officers) from bringing personal firearms into city buildings. However, they were allowed to have the firearms in their “privately owned and locked vehicle” as long as it was  hidden out of sight.

According to the AJC, Roswell City Council has taken a step to change that law. On duty firefighters may now bring their personal firearm inside to store in a secure locked box, rather than having to leave it out in the car.

Roswell, near Atlanta, will be providing each fire station with lock boxes for the firearms’ storage. It is expected to cost an estimate of $2,500 each.

The city council decided to make this change after the string of reports about break-ins in the metro area. Guns have reportedly been stolen out of firefighters’ vehicles outside the fire station, at an alarming rate, while the firemen are out on a call.
