The high school in Parkland, Florida that was terrorized by confessed killer Nikolas Cruz last week had an armed guard on staff, whose story of that fateful day is a hard one to hear.

Many schools throughout the nation employ what is often called a “School Resources Officer”, which is just a fancy way of saying “security guard”.  These officers aren’t often needed, but their presence is their effectiveness:  An armed guard is quite the deterrent for these sort of incidents.

But what happens when that security officer decides to run away from the danger, as opposed to fulfilling his duty to protect the children who are being mercilessly hunted by a former peer?

To find out, we would need to ask Stoneman Marjory Douglas High School resource officer Scot Peterson – a former Broward County sheriff’s deputy who not only failed to engage the confessed murderer, but actively worked to remove himself from the dangerous situation instead.

Unfortunately, no one is getting anywhere near Peterson.

“Reporters who attempted to approach the West Palm Beach home of ex-Broward County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Scot Peterson were reportedly met with resistance from at least six police officers who were standing guard outside.

“’They prevented us from approaching the house,’WSVN’s Frank Guzman tweeted Thursday.”

Peterson, whose act of unbelievable pusillanimity will forever be horrifically enshrined in popular culture, was even put on blast by the President, who expressed his disgust for the actions of the former police officer.

“Before departing for his speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference on Friday morning, Trump, in a set of fiery remarks, lambasted Peterson.

“‘When it came time to get in there and do something, he didn’t have the courage, or something happened,’ Trump said. ‘He certainly did a poor job. That’s the case where somebody was outside, they are trained, they didn’t react properly under pressure or they were a coward.'”

Just how bad was Peterson’s reaction?

“Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said Peterson, who was armed when gunman Nikolas Cruz opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, ‘never went in[to]’ the building that was under attack. He said the school resource officer instead took up a position viewing the western entrance of the building.”

Now, Peterson is retiring, (thankfully for those under his watch), after receiving over $75,000 per year for whatever “services” he provided.  (We use the word “provided” lightly).
