Kids are mean…not just to one another, bit to their siblings, their parents, and the family cat too.  It’s just part of growing up.

At some point in your life, you learn to draw a line in the sand.  Usually, sometime right around 2nd grade or so, when personalities are starting to develop, and a little bit of pride and ego can be seen just germinating with these otherwise innocent and naive minds.

We all know that being “tough” is going to be important, so we try out different ways of being tough.  One of those ways is by picking on one another, playing pranks, or, unfortunately getting into pointless little scuffles in the school yard.

As these children graduate to adolescence, the behavior gets a little more severe with the addition of raging hormones.  Things are quite as innocent anymore, but, at least when I was growing up, we weren’t getting people shot or killed as a goof.

I’m talking, of course, about “swatting” – the practice of calling 911 and proclaiming that you are at your bullying victim’s address and that you’ve taken hostages or some other such call that will prompt a response from the SWAT team.

The confusing conversation that occurs between these emergency personnel and the home’s occupants can often end tragically, as neither party are in the proper state of mind in the eyes of the other.  The SWAT team are expecting an agitated and reckless armed criminal barricading him or herself in a home.  The actual occupants of the home are not expecting any part of the situation, let alone a shouting, shooting, and shoving SWAT team breaking down the front door.

That is precisely what some miscreants did to Parkland shooting survivor David Hogg’s family Tuesday.

A call came in to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office at 8:39 a.m. on Tuesday, a spokesperson said, claiming there was someone in the house with a weapon.

The SWAT team went in and cleared the home. It was determined that the call was a hoax and the spokesperson said that no one was in the house at the time.

Hogg, speaking to BuzzFeed News Tuesday morning, called the hoax a distraction.

“The main thing I would say is they’re trying to distract us from the March for Our Lives ‘Road to Change,’ which is the largest youth voter registration push in American history by other young kids going to over 75 congressional districts getting kids registered to vote,” Hogg said, referring to the activists’ summer road trip announced on Monday.

While we do not always agree with David Hogg, (understatement of the decade), swatting is a completely inexcusable and heinous waste of our law enforcement’s time, and it is ultimately extremely dangerous.
