If you look on a map at the state of Virginia, follow it to the western-most point of the state where it meets with Kentucky and Tennessee. That is Lee County, Virginia, with a population of about 25,000.

With the growing incidence of school shootings and recognizing that the best defense is a trained and strong offense, Lee County has take steps to become the first county in Virginia to train and arm teachers to be able to react to an active shooter and help save the lives of students and teachers.

The vote by the school board was unanimous in favor of training and arming teachers.

(The Republican Standard) – Throughout the country, at least 14 states arm teachers with firearms on school grounds, with another 16 states giving local school boards the authority to set a campus carry policy for school staff, decisions that have increasingly been made after an onslaught of school shootings. Last week, the Lee County School Board voted unanimously to allow teachers to carry firearms at school to defend against potential threats, the first county in Virginia to do so.

“The only way to fight a gun, if somebody comes through these doors with a gun to shoot our students, is with another gun,” school board Chairman Michael Kidwell said in a report from The Blaze.

The school board also considered other options for increasing school security, including metal detectors and additional school resource officers. However, the solutions turned out to requiring funding the district didn’t have, but board members felt they had to do something to ensure the safety of students…

Defending our kids in school is no different than defending our nation. It’s done with a strong offense that generally thwarts anyone from even trying to attack. If mass shooters, including school shooters know that there are armed and trained personnel on location wherever they want to target, chances are they won’t carry out the attack. Did you know that the shooter at the Pulse night club first targeted other locations, but since they had armed guards, the shooter settled on the unarmed and unprotected Pulse night club? That shooting had nothing to do with sexual orientation but had everything to do with armed security or no armed security.
