If you are as naïve as Evansville City Councilman Jonathan Weaver, you may be jumping with joy at the news of his proposal for a gun buyback. His blind, knee-jerk reaction comes after the city had a record number of homicides.

Weaver pointed to St. Louis as his example of how a gun buy-back helps reduce gun violence, but I have no idea where he is getting his information. Yeah, St. Louis held a gun buy-back and many guns were turned in, but the level of gun violence in the Archway City has not diminished to the extent that would indicate the gun buy-back was successful.

Weaver also fails to understand that 14 of the 19 murder victims were killed by a felon who was already banned from gun ownership.

(Ammoland Shooting Sports News) – “City leaders considering gun buyback program,” NBCs Indiana affiliate WFIE News 14, Evansville, “reports.”  It’s one of those vapid and manipulative pieces that are a staple of local affiliates masking an agenda while trying to appear crusading and relevant.

The “city leader” in question is Councilman Jonathan Weaver, who thinks he can stage such a media event for around  $115K. Per the television report, he asserts it’s the type of thing “bigger cities like St. Louis have tried successfully.”

Would that be the St. Louis where “a … letter went out to more than 200 other families of people who were killed … during the most violent year the city has seen in more than 20 years”?

Weaver got his brainstorm after some “recent shootings in Evansville.” Gang shootings

Gun buy-backs only serve to boost the political aspiration of the naïve idiots that push them. Many drug addicts will steal as many guns as possible to turn in for money to support their drug habits. Criminals dump guns used in crimes and get paid for doing it. I recall seeing one report that said gun buy-backs cause as many crimes as they prevent. In the end, criminals still get guns if they want them and the violence continues.
