The atrocity committed by a mentally disturbed young man in Florida could have been prevented, or mitigated, in a number of ways, and Alabama lawmakers understand that.

The most damning bit of evidence for this is the fact that the FBI was warned about 19 year old Nikolas Cruz months ago and did nothing.  This mimics the federal response to reports from a gun shop owner in Florida who similarly alerted the FBI to Pulse Nightclub shooter Omar Mateen, who was left alone to commit his also-horrendous massacre.

Furthermore, students were quick to assume that Cruz was the culprit soon after the shooting began, with many of those enrolled at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School admitting that they “saw it coming”.

On top of those failures of the “see something, say something” system, this particular school in Florida was, you guessed it, a “gun free” zone – meaning that there were no armed citizens allowed on campus, giving Cruz a complacent barrel in which to unload on these fish.

Alabama lawmakers have seen the error of this, however, and are making a statement by bolstering the state’s “hold your ground” laws.

“The Alabama House of Representatives voted 40-16 to expand “Stand Your Ground” the day after the Florida school shooting occurred.

“The vote was to broaden the statute to allow defense of life in churches. It was presented as part of an overarching goal of removing weak spots in current law so that citizens can defend themselves when an attacker strikes.

“The Seattle Times quoted state Rep. Lynn Greer (R-Rogersville), saying, ‘You got nuts everywhere just like you had in the high school in Florida yesterday. Occasionally, they show up in a church.’”

Of course, the leftist response was sickeningly absurd, and, in this case, highly insulting as well.

“Democrats opposed the vote to expand Stand Your Ground, with Rep. Chris England (D-Tuscaloosa) describing the pro-self-defense push as ‘pandering.'”

Pandering?  The audacity needed to even concoct such as argument should automatically disqualify someone for public service.
